Americans Won't Celebrate a World Cup Before 2030
Mattrick, October 10, 2008
I'm sure the first thing that comes to mind is, "Are you joking?" How could a great sports nation like the United States ever go that long without winning a championship? It all comes down to the grassroots. We just don't have any. Major League Soccer drafts players out of college around the age of 22. That is much too old in comparison to the development of players in other countries. Michael Owen played for Liverpool at age... 16? There is a long list of world class sub-18 year olds playing for (or have played) their country and team. How can you expect college kids to play against the world's best? They barely get by in the MLS.
We have started to move in the right direction, at least. Since our youth won't be getting any worthy training, our national players play overseas in Europe. This is the best possible training these guys could ever hope for.
The United States simply doesn't have the talent scounts or preteen development that other nations have, where clubs like Manchester United pay for the rights of kids as young as 12 years old.
With the world competition only getting tougher and tougher (even Australia, Japan, Scotland, and Turkey are knocking off big teams), it won't be any time soon the United States could even hope to make it to a World Cup final. The USA has the resources, money, population, and drive -- they just don't have the knowhow.
World Rank: 21
Last 5 Wins: Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba, Guatemala, Barbados (x2)
